Planning Facilitation Training

While working at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in the fall of 2021, I coordinated four training sessions on Facilitation for 80 students on behalf of my unit

I am currently working for Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Pacific Region within the Consultation Secretariat. One of the primary responsibilities of my unit is sponsoring and organizing training for staff to help them in their consultation with the public. This fall we chose to sponsor four training sessions on Facilitation through the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), with two courses being offered at an Introductory level and two at an Advanced level.

I was in charge of organizing these trainings. This required communicating with the JIBC team in order to determine when they would be able to host the training, who would be giving the training, and coordinating quotes and invoices. The next step was to write the promotional texts that were shared with the entire DFO Pacific staff. See an example of a promotional text here: Advanced Facilitation for Trainers_Workshop. After that, I registered participants and placed people on the waitlist once all spots were filled. I then sent the event information and prep materials to all participants.

On the week of each session, I recorded all late dropouts and moved people off the waitlist. During the sessions, I acted as tech support by sending some messages in the chat about resources and sharing my email in case of issues. I also had the opportunity to be a participant in two of the four sessions. Finally, I collected and reviewed feedback sent in by participants to determine how our unit could better deliver training in the future.
