In order to advance our various data management projects, my unit at CWS decided to hire a new coop student with experience in data management. This process started near the end of the fiscal year, meaning that many staff members were incredibly busy. So instead of putting their time into selecting a new candidate, I was asked to start the process.
My coworker submitted the position to various coop programs and when the applications were returned, I was the first to do a coarse review. I read the cover letter and resume from all 40 applicants and determined whether or not they fit the mandatory qualifications on the job description.
I gave my analysis to the future supervisor of this student who selected the interview candidates.
I participated in 3 of the 6 interviews. In each one, I asked the candidates questions, responded to their questions and took notes. Afterward, I compiled my notes and impression of each candidate and submitted them to the supervisor.
She took all of our opinions into consideration and successfully hired a student with data management experience to work with CWS for the summer and fall terms.
I learnt a lot about the hiring process including the importance of well-written resumes and cover letters, following the job application carefully, and answering questions clearly in interviews.
